ARANGAM 08
ARANGAM Festival aims to battle the notions of disinterested, disengaged and disenfranchised youths through art. Ravindran Drama Group believes that art can serve as the antennae of society, tuned into the next social change that needs to be made. Collectively, we need to lift art out of its second-class role as entertainment, diversion or hobby, and raise it to be an instrument for transformation. We also need to encourage and empower youths to become independent thinkers who are able to listen to and respond with appreciation and understanding to the thoughts and opinions of others. The Targeted audience for this show are mainly youths, students in junior colleges, primary and secondary schools. |

TAJ MAHAL
Taj Mahal is an all time love story that many people have attempted to show through film and print media. Many dance choreographers have also attempted to depict the Shah Jahan and Mumtaz love story through various dance forms. But this is the first time, that a theatre piece is conceived on Taj Mahal and Ravindran Drama Group is proud to present it to our Singapore audience as part of its 20th Anniversary. Taj Mahal is an inspired or inspirational piece of work that tracks us back to the Mogul period during the 16th century. This period play is created to depict the episodes of various characters in showcasing the respect for Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. Much research is being conducted to understand the intricacies of relationship, the ploys to supersede one another politically. The interesting use of architecture and art in the lifestyle of the mogul people. Mogul period is best known for its Hindustani Gazals and Persian music influence in North India. Kathak types of dance were a great favourite among the kings. This play attempts to show nothing more than just that. The Targeted audience
for this show are people from all walks of life and from the various multicultural
backgrounds. These will be mainly beneficial to teachers and students
of secondary and tertiary levels as we are talking about one of the Wonders
of the World. |

Puthiya
Uthiram presents Saathai (Flesh)
Puthiya Uthiram or New Infusion is our exploratory platform where new theatre practitioners can explore and present their aspiration for theatre and ideas. This year we present one noteworthy experimental works Sathai (Flesh) Flesh attempts to break social boundaries set within the community for personal gain. The play is positioned within a complex barter trade practiced in society where sex is the commodity. Are women victims of lust? Objects of desire? Heartbreakers? Emotionalists? Feminists? Manipulative? On the other hand, are men impulsive? Horny? Reckless? Chauvinistic? These questions tread further in the play to unfold a story that takes you to the darker realms of the human mind. Flesh explores the reality of human behaviour being taken as a product of interest. Sexual satisfaction is juxtaposed as flesh trade. This concept is triggered from the recent influx of media programmes, where sexuality was used as a commodity to satisfy a global demand. The writer tries to highlight the sexual expectations and exploitations that occur socially through this experimental performance. This performance has the potential for wider exploration and broader understanding of the human mind and needs. Ever had a taste of rotting meat? Wondered how it would look, up close? The smell? The Director is not talking about the meat that you buy in the market but puts forth a case of moral dilemma and victimisation through a trade that is beyond rationalisation. The Targeted audience for this show are people from all walks of life and from the various multicultural backgrounds. It will also interest theatre enthusiast and budding talents. |

Azaghi
– Beauty is the Beast (A Children Rhapsody)
Beauty Is the Beast is an inspired piece based purely on the writer’s imagination with moments that will hit, not just the young people but the diachronic of the old as well. With majestic yet contemporary touches in its presentation style and beautifully crafted for stage. This play plans to incorporate many interesting elements of Indian and western theatre and dance. It plans to incorporate, traditional dance and theatre forms like mask play, ball-room dancing, bommal attam, poikaal kuthirai, kaavadi attam, karragattam, mayilattam, yuilattam, thappattam, kollattam, puliattam, silambattam and other traditional art forms that are slowly being forgotten. There will be magic moments with flying fairies, glittering costumes and jewelleries and a mix of local multicultural touches. This production is ambitious yet practical with well knowledge guidance from talents and teachers of the respective art forms. Performed by children from the age of 9 to 15, this is another venture from Ravindran drama group which successfully staged Ali Baba, Asuran and China China Sithandam. This production will showcase more than 30 children on stage and supported by 20 and more adults in creative and technical guidance of this performance making process. This play is presented in Tamil and runs for about 2 hours. The story has been carefully written to encompass moral values and language interest among children mainly. At a period where there is not much stage productions for the young RDG strives with a production with big scale and outlook during the year end school holidays for children to take a break from studies and to distract them to the artistic and creative aspect of life. The Targeted audience for this show are mainly children from primary and secondary levels and also parents who are still young at heart to watch a child play. It will also interest teachers who will organise year end class gathering and arts exposure programmes. |

Doubil Bill (Vetti & NGS)
This presentation of two comical double is basically to entice audience into theatre and make them laugh Out Loud (LOL). This is catered to the older generation where presentation techniques and story board layering are just too complicated and beyond comprehension. Thus this presentation will break from the hard core theatre and present a simple idea just for laughs. This year we present Vetti the happening in a barber shop, poking fun at the nuance and comical incidents that happen where the gentlemen goes for a hair cut and the second piece explores the intricacies of life of glamour and pomp in NGS.
