AZAGHI, (Beauty is the Beast)

Beauty Is the Beast is an inspired piece based purely on the writer’s imagination in a fairy tale style with moments that will hit, not just the young people but the diachronic of the old as well. With majestic yet contemporary touches in its presentation style and beautifully crafted for stage. This play plans to incorporate many interesting elements of Indian and western theatre and dance. Performed by children from the age of 9 to 15. This play is presented in Tamil and runs for about 2 hours. The story has been carefully written to encompass moral values and intrigue language interest among children.

The story is about a young princess named, Azhagi who thinks that she is the most beautiful person in this world. She did grow up to be the most beautiful lady in the entire kingdom but hardly anyone liked her for her boastful and arrogant character. She was vicious, inhuman, nasty, disrespectful, arrogant and extremely proud. Azhagi had a younger sister, who was apparently not as pretty as Azhagi but she had a heart of gold and everyone loved her courteous and giving nature.

One fine day, there was a welcome feast in the Solluvain kingdom for a young prince, from the neighbouring kingdoms. Azhagi was very excited about the feast and was all prepared to make him get mesmerized by her beauty. But the prince was deeply moved by the patience and warmth shown to him by Azaghi’s sister. This is because the prince was actually blind and Azaghi’s sister knew this when they got introduced, whereas, Azagi was full of herself that she failed to see beyond herself. Thus not knowing that prince was blind, she couldn’t come to terms that the prince was moving closely with her sister. After observing the prince and younger princess’s attraction to each other King Solluvain, announced their marriage, Azhagi gets furious, that she is ignored.

Seeing how atrocious Azhagi have grown up to be, the fairy godmother decided to teach Azhagi a lesson about life. So the fairy godmother changed Azhagi into a unpleasant smelling girl with torn clothes and deserted her into the village end and put a spell on everybody that they completely forgets Azaghi’s existence. Azaghi desperately identifies herself to everybody in the kingdom but everyone rejects and chides her. Azhagi approaches different people in the street asking for help but everyone pushed her away as well.
Finally she meets Sanjay, a young handsome man who believes in living a peaceful yet meaningful life. Sanjay helped her and brought her to his home. Sanjay’s siblings took great care and showered her with lots of love. Azhagi soon felt at home at home. Observing Sanjay and his sibling’s humble and loving lifestyle and how helpful and welcoming they are at all times to everybody, made Azaghi think. Azhagi learned the true meaning of life on how being beautiful at heart is more important than looking beautiful. On seeing Azaghi learned her lesson the fairy god mother made her beautiful again and restored her place in the palace.
